Coast FIRE Calculator

See whether your current savings, left to grow untouched, are already enough to reach your FIRE number by retirement.

Not sure of your FIRE number? Work it out on the FIRE timeline calculator first.

-Coast FIRE number today
-Amount still needed today
-Age your current savings alone would reach the target

This is a rough estimate for education, not financial advice. It assumes a constant real return with no further contributions, no withdrawals and no market volatility, none of which is realistic year to year. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE is the point where your current savings, given enough time and growth, will reach your full FIRE number by your target retirement age without adding another dollar. Once you hit it, you can "coast": you may still choose to work, but only enough to cover current living expenses, since your retirement is already funded by growth alone. This calculator discounts your FIRE number back to today using your expected real (after-inflation) return, and compares that to what you already have saved.

Frequently asked questions

Does Coast FIRE mean I should stop saving?

Not necessarily. Many people keep saving past their coast number to retire earlier than their original target age, or to build in a safety margin.

Why does the return matter so much?

Because the number is projected many years into the future, even small differences in assumed return change the required amount today a great deal. Try a lower return to see a more conservative estimate.
